Why a Boston Viking Dishwasher Leaves Water After Every Cycle
Standing water at the end of a Viking cycle is usually a blocked filter or a drain path that was set up wrong on installation day — a missing disposer knockout, a lost high loop, a kinked hose. Check the filter, then the route out.
A surprising number of these calls trace back to the week the kitchen was finished rather than to anything that broke. A dishwasher that has never drained properly, or that stopped the month a new waste disposer went in, is telling a different story from one that worked for nine years and quit. Establishing which of those you have is the first useful thing you can do.
Before anything else: is this actually a fault?
Some water in the bottom is meant to be there. A wet sump is deliberate — the pump seal would dry out between cycles otherwise — so a shallow film of water sitting beneath the filter at the end of a programme is exactly right. What is not normal is water covering the tub floor, water above the filter housing, or water you can hear moving when the door opens.
The distinction matters because it changes who you call. If the level has not moved in months and the dishes are clean, you are probably looking at the design and not a failure.
Write down three things before anything is touched — when it began, whether it is every programme or only the short ones, and whether anybody has altered the plumbing under the sink. Pulling the filter and reading what is on it
The filter assembly sits in the floor of the tub, usually as a cylindrical section that twists free and a flat plate beneath it that lifts out once the cylinder is gone. Series differ, so turn gently and stop if it resists rather than forcing a quarter turn that was never meant to happen. Everything comes out by hand.
What you find is diagnostic in itself. Paper labels and seed husks mean the filter is doing its job and simply needs emptying more often. A grey, greasy coating that smears rather than rinses means the water is not getting hot enough to carry fat out, and that is a different conversation. A hard, gritty crust suggests mineral deposit building over a long period.
Under the plate is the sump and the impeller. A fragment of glass, a fruit stone or a chip of bone can sit in there and stall the pump completely. Look before you reach, use a torch, and if something is wedged rather than loose, that is the point to stop.
Rinse the parts under a running tap with a soft brush. How often that needs doing depends on the series and how the machine is loaded, so take the interval from the guide that came with it rather than a general figure.
Everything between the machine and the drain
The hose leaving the machine has to climb before it descends. That rise — either a high loop strapped up under the counter or an air gap fitted through the sink deck — is what stops dirty water flowing back down into the tub once the pump stops. Without it, the machine can pump perfectly and still be refilled by gravity within minutes.
Whether your installation uses an air gap or a high loop depends on how the kitchen was plumbed and what the code in force required at the time. Both approaches are common in the city and neither is a fault by itself.
Then there is the knockout. A dishwasher plumbed into a waste disposer drains through a spigot on the side of that disposer, and a new disposer arrives with that spigot sealed by a moulded plug. If the plug is not driven out during installation, the dishwasher has nowhere to send its water at all. This is the classic call after a disposer swap, and it looks exactly like a pump failure from inside the kitchen.
Kinks come last and are commonest after work has been done. In a South Boston galley where the machine was pulled out to lay flooring and pushed back tight, the hose behind it is the softest thing in the gap.
What the machine sounds like when it tries and cannot
You have ears and no meter, so use them. A pump running against a blockage makes a strained, higher-pitched note and holds it — energy going in, nothing moving. A pump that has failed electrically makes no sound at all where the drain step should be, and the cycle simply moves on. A pump moving water through a partial restriction sounds normal but runs long.
A check valve sits in the outlet to stop return flow. When it sticks open, water comes back; when it sticks shut, the pump strains against it. Both present at the door as standing water and cannot be told apart by listening alone.

When the drain step never ran at all
There is a real difference between a pump that tried and a pump that was never asked. Stand beside the machine for the last few minutes of a cycle. If you hear the drain attempt and then silence with water still standing, the fault is mechanical or hydraulic. If the cycle ends with no drain sound whatsoever, the control never energised the pump, and the question moves to the board, the wiring or a sensor telling it something it believes.
A displayed code helps here but does not conclude anything. A code records what the control observed, not which component caused the observation, and two very different faults can raise the same one.
Running a cancel-and-drain is worth doing as a test rather than a fix. If it empties the tub, the drain path is passable and the fault sits in how the cycle is being run. If it does not, you have narrowed things usefully in one attempt.
When drainage degrades over months rather than overnight
The slow version looks nothing like the sudden one. Scale narrows passages and coats the filter mesh, so each cycle drains slightly less completely than the last, and the household adjusts without noticing. By the time somebody calls, the machine has been failing for a year.
Detergent behaviour is a symptom here, not a cause. Film on glassware, a dispenser door found still shut, residue in the corners of the tub — all of them read as detergent problems and all of them can be water that is not leaving properly. Changing product will not move it.
Whether Boston water is mineral-heavy enough to drive this at your address is worth confirming for your street rather than assuming, since supply varies. And under no circumstances pour a chemical drain cleaner into a dishwasher: it is not designed for it, and the seals and pump are what pay for it.
What to hand over to a technician
Three things end the investigation immediately. Standing water together with a burning-electrical smell. A breaker that trips when the machine runs. Water on the floor rather than in the tub. In each case, isolate the machine and leave it.

Should we stop running the machine until it is looked at?
If the only symptom is water left in the tub, running it is unlikely to make anything worse, though the water will go stale and the smell will follow. Stop immediately if there is any burning smell, if the breaker trips, or if water appears on the floor. Those three point at an electrical fault or a leak, and both get more expensive the longer the machine keeps running.
How much water in the base counts as normal?
A wet sump is designed behaviour — it keeps the pump seal from drying between cycles, so a shallow film sitting below the filter housing is expected and is not worth chasing. The line to watch is the filter itself. Water standing above it, spreading across the tub floor, or audibly sloshing when you open the door is a drainage failure rather than residue.

Almost certainly. A new disposer ships with the dishwasher inlet sealed by a moulded knockout plug that has to be driven out before the drain hose is connected to it. Leave the plug in and the dishwasher has nowhere to pump. The machine is fine, the pump is fine, and the symptom is total: water stands in the tub after every cycle from the day the disposer went in.
